The Git and the Bazaar

When looking for an alternative way of doing source code management, I came across a number of distributed version control systems, among them git and Bazaar (or bzr). While the former may be technologically the most elegant and efficient system around, Bazaar is so far ahead in usability, documentation, and support that the choice is really quite easy.

German vs. English, Kuriositaeten, etc.

The language pages have been replaced by the language category on this website. That category will be updated with postings on German, English, and the relationship between the two on a more or less regular basis.

Die Seiten zum Thema Sprache wurden durch die Kategorie Language ersetzt. Diese Kategorie enthält alle Postings zum Thema Sprache und wird (einigermaßen) regelmäßig mit neuen Artikeln aktualisiert.

Research

My main research interest is Information Visualization (InfoVis), specifically the visualization of large and difficult data sets. This page describes some of my work, including Parallel Sets, Molecule Visualization, Large Data Information Visualization, User Studies, Semantic Depth of Field (SDOF), and AsbruView.

Information Visualization (InfoVis)

Information Visualization (InfoVis) is a field of research that deals with the visual display of data. By looking at images of the data, we can use the immense power of our visual system to detect patterns or outliers, and quite generally come to a better understanding of our data. To achieve this, the visualization method must be suitable for the data and the task in question.

The Loch-Lomo, A Pinhole Camera

The Loch-Lomo is a pinhole camera I built from an old Agfa Clack 6x9 box camera.

Pinhole Photography

A pinhole camera is the most basic type of camera: a light-tight box, a piece of film or photographic paper, and a small hole to let light in. Pinhole cameras produce images like no other camera, and offer a lot of room for experimentation. They are also easy to make.

The Kosara Page

One of the most amazing things about the internet is how you can find people and things at virtually any place in the world. This is how Paul Kosara (who lives in the US, while I am in Austria) found me, and got me interested in finding more people with this rather unusual name (or so I still assume).

About Me

What would a vanity website be without detailed information about its owner? The idea, of course, is that not only this particular page, but all the information on this website taken together will give a concise and complete picture of who I am and what I do.
